The Tollway teamed with IDOT to co-sponsor a project that is to generate design and construction details for integral abutment (or jointless) bridges. This will be accomplished by generating finite element models for various integral bridge superstructures, and by using strain gauges and other sensors on several of the Tollway's newly built integral abutment bridges. The application of jointless integral abutment bridges can be expanded in comparison to what IDOT's bridge manual allows as a result of this project. Many of the bridges on I-90 will be built as integral abutment bridges using the new design criteria that IDOT is developing.
