Coring is required for density determinations in flexible pavements and for pavement layer thickness determinations for both rigid and flexible pavements. Although this method accurately measures thickness, it is destructive, labor intensive, and time‐consuming. Coring pavements can introduce weak spots in the new pavement that may lead to maintenance issues later, even if the core hole is filled in accordance with accepted practices.
