Project description

The objective of this project is to evaluate the performance of concrete pavement with wider panels (14 feet or greater) to determine if the frequency of longitudinal cracking in these sections is greater than in sections with standard-width panels (12 to 13 feet). If increased cracking is observed, the research will quantify the significance of the differences in performance. WisDOT has assumed that using widened sections would result in additional service life for the pavement and would significantly reduce shoulder maintenance. Determining whether these assumptions are correct will allow the department to more accurately assess the advantages and disadvantages of wider sections, and to plan for future pavement rehabilitation and maintenance needs.
