InTrans joins CCEE 150th celebration

Occasion offers opportunity to meet ISU alumnus Richard Gumtau

Richard Gumtau, an ISU alumnus and retired FHWA safety engineer, met with InTrans researchers during the CCEE 150th anniversary celebration

The Iowa State University (ISU) Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) celebrated its 150th anniversary with a series of events in September. The Institute for Transportation (InTrans) joined in the weekend-long festivities.

A highlight of the celebration for InTrans researchers was the chance to meet and reconnect with former colleagues and other ISU alumni, including Richard Gumtau. Gumtau is a proud ISU alumnus and retired Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) safety engineer who has 30 years of experience in highway safety.

“We were thrilled that his travels brought him back to ISU for the 150th celebration and for the opportunity to hold a lunch for him, where our InTrans researchers were able to talk with him over a variety of current InTrans projects and transportation problems to be solved,” said InTrans Director Shauna Hallmark.

Gumtau has supported ISU students with past presentations on safety analysis and the software tools available, and he has taught many of the FHWA’s short courses on highway safety in the US and overseas, including co-authoring one of their courses.

“Our thanks to Richard for always taking the time to interact with ISU researchers and students and for his dedication to safety and excellence,” InTrans Associate Director Neal Hawkins added.

The CCEE department has a proud heritage dating to the founding of the Iowa State Agricultural College as a land-grant institution, which would go on to become Iowa State University. During that time, they’ve seen extraordinary research and teaching methods evolve but have always kept a dedication to excellence.
